Nipper Programs

When you register your child for nippers, you need to select your preferred stream. OGSLSC offers three programs for children aged 7-13 to suit different interests and levels of involvement. All three streams take place in a fun, active environment that encourages a healthy lifestyle and team spirit – just like you’d expect in surf lifesaving.

While Nippers need to select one program when registering, there may be opportunities to transfer streams throughout the season, subject to discussion with age group coaches.

Core Sunday Nippers

Sunday mornings 9am-10.30am, from 12th October to February

This program focuses on teaching children the fundamentals of surf safety, beach awareness and basic lifesaving skills. It’s designed for all abilities and is a great way for kids to build confidence in the surf while being active and making friends.

The main aims of the core program are to:

  • Develop surf awareness
  • Increase confidence and skills in beach related activities
  • Build the lifesavers of the future
  • Provide training for competition or awards
  • Encourage enjoyable and healthy participation
  • Meet new friends and have heaps of FUN!

Children start learning about surf awareness, safety and surf skills based around the Surf Life Saving Education Program (Surf Ed) and develop and practice those skills.

This National program is structured specifically to their ages and abilities, gradually teaching kids basic lifesaving skills as well as developing their skills to compete in surf sports and become future life savers.  This is a core requirement for kids wishing to also do the surf sport program.

Fees & Charges:

In addition to your family membership, a $50 levy for the season, which goes towards maintenance of Nipper trailer, marquees, etc.

Surf Sport

Friday evenings as well as some Tuesday & Wednesday evenings, from October to February

Note: Surf Sport Nippers will also be automatically registered for the Core Sunday Nippers program.

Surf Sport builds on the Core skills and offers more focused training for children who are interested in competing at carnivals.

The main aims of the Surf Sports Program are to:

  • Further refine key skills
  • Develop competition skills
  • Develop surf sport confidence in the water
  • Develop surf sport fitness and speed

The Surf Sports Program has been specifically designed to cater for kids wishing to take nippers beyond the Core program to specifically hone their skills for competition.

In the training sessions there will be a greater focus on refining skills, developing endurance and fitness to support their participation in competition events.

Because sessions can involve longer distances and more advanced techniques, a certain level of confidence, fitness and surf ability is needed to get the most out of the program.

Fees & Charges:

In addition to your family membership, a $50 levy for the season, which goes towards maintenance of Nipper trailer, marquees, etc.
