What is IRB Racing all about?
The OGSLSC IRB Racing Team exists to improve our skills as drivers and crew so that, ultimately, we are better surf life savers. The team is open to all members of the club with the relevant qualification (IRB driver and/or crew).
IRB racing is a mainly winter sport and involves competing at four Victorian carnivals and the Victorian Championships. Some crews will go on to attend the Australian Championships and possibly an interstate carnival in SA as well. Last year crews also attended the World IRB Championships.
Carnivals generally consist of racing in four disciplines:- IRB Rescue
- IRB Tube Rescue
- IRB Mass Rescue
- IRB Teams
There is the addition of the “IRB Taplin” - a combined discipline event - at some carnivals.
Teams usually consist of an IRB crew (driver/crewman) and a patient (sometimes 2 patients). Most crews will race a minimum of three times in a carnival but could compete up to 20 times through heats, quarters and semis then finals.
Racing is from the beach to inshore “cans” and back and involves use of all the skills of the driver and the crewperson.
We welcome potential competitors of all abilities from beginner to national level. We aim to train regularly, learn and improve throughout the season, race hard, and enjoy our season socially and competitively.
